SPRING
SUMMER

INTRODUCTION

The spring & summer months are perfect for wild camping. The long days & warm nights are ideal for longer hikes & spending the night under canvas or bivi.

CLOTHING

The warm temperatures mean lighter clothing is more appropriate, short sleeve t-shirt base-layers, & thinner walking trousers. But also bear in mind as the temperatures drop the higher the altitude & the temperatures drop overnight, then its always handy to pack a fleece for those cooler nights. It wouldn't harm to have a light waterproof jacket in your pack as well so you don't get caught out in those summer showers

Although it may be tempting to wear shorts as well, just be wary when walking through long grass or bracken as ticks are more prevalent in the warm months. This could turn a trip sour if they latch on to your arm or leg and tag along. Packing a tick remover & anti-septic cream in your First Aid kit will at least help you deal with the situation should it arise.

Sunglasses,  hat and sunscreen / sun tan lotion is also a must to prevent sunburn. A good quality base-layer will also have UV protection properties, so check the label when looking to buy.

SLEEPING SYSTEM

A thinner sleeping bag can be taken as well - a 1 or 2 season rating will be fine for the Great British summer & the smaller size will mean a slightly lighter pack weight.

FOOD & DRINK

However, you'll need to pack more water to stave off dehydration - or alternatively just pack a filter, and grab water on-the-go as and when you need it. Just remember to make sure you plan ahead and make sure your route passes good water sources such as becks or tarns. Some smaller water sources may also dry up in the height of summer, so have an emergency water ration in your pack to be on the safe side.

In regards food, don't take anything that can melt, or otherwise spoil, in heat, as it won't last if stuffed into your back-pack. Stick to dry items, and boil in the bag / re-hydrated meals - as these will also keep your pack weight down.
